Making Information Based Decisions – Webinar

Planon Software IWMS Recently I had the pleasure of delivering my first webinar for Facility Managers.

The webinar was hosted by Planon Software and dealt with using information for decision making. If you missed it, you can watch and listen to it on-demand for free here.

In addition to my segment, Planon’s Director of Product Strategy, Erik Jaspers, also gave some great examples of how to use information from an FM System in Facility Management.

I’ve talked before about the importance of having decisions here on my blog, and it’s been part of several of my Facility Management workshops and seminars as well as a section in my book “Managing Facilities & Real Estate.”

Are your Facilities Decisions Uninformed? It’s time for a Change

No Information to make decisions with for Facility Management For some reason. I’ve been seeing a lot of articles recently about using information for decision making. Some in our industry, but lots in other areas as well.

What this confirms to me is that the Facility Management industry is a business function in addition to a technical or tactical function. The methods, approaches, skills and knowledge used in other business functions also apply to Facility and Property Management.

It’s one of the reasons I suggest Facility Managers get training in other business related fields as well as read books in other business areas. These types of skills are also a key theme of my book “Managing Facilities & Real Estate”

Learn from Wal-Mart about the value of Information

In the Facility and Property Management profession, I see an important ingredient missing from many organizations – good information.

That’s information you can use to make decisions and improvements both with internally delivered services and with your suppliers.

An excellent example of the value of information, even if not directly related, is Wal-Mart. Their retail success is something that even Facility Managers can learn from.

Visibility

I see a trend when talking with senior facility and property professionals about their processes and systems. The trend is a lack of visibility into crucial aspects of their costs and activities.
