IFMA Facility Fusion 2011 Panel in Boston – The Evolution of FM

Recently, I was invited to be on the panel at the opening session of IFMA’s Facility Fusion conference in Boston.

The focus of the panel was the ‘Evolution of Facility Management’, a topic I am very passionate about.

My recent business trips to the Middle East and Aftrica re-emphasized to me the need to develop Facility Management beyond its original roots of a very technical and tactical function into a profession that while still grounded in technical requirements, leverages strategic business skills to make a difference for the companies we serve.

It was a privilege being on the panel with the other panelists, all senior FM leaders. You can watch a video of the panel further below.

Are you Connected to Knowledge and Experience in the Facility Management Industry?

Connecting in Facility Management I had a conversation recently with a client, the head of a large facilities department. We were talking about the difference between those who get involved and advance their knowledge and those who don’t. Which one do you think are more likely to get ahead in their careers and deliver results for their employers?

It’s usually the ones who are active and connected in the FM industry.

Trade Shows and Conferences can Provide Solutions to Facilities Problems You Didn’t Know You Had

When’s the last time you got out of your office? If you don’t attend Facility Management or Property Management related trade shows and conferences, you aren’t keeping up with the industry and your colleagues and you aren’t discovering solutions and products that will benefit your company.

Getting the most out of your FM Association

Building a professional career in facility or property management means more than simply doing a good job for your employer. It also means getting involved in associations that represent your industry to expand your knowledge and learn from others. And, it doesn’t help to network with other professionals and service providers.

If you look at what you do as a profession, not just a job, you will benefit from involvement in a Facility or Property management based association.

Why Your Organization Needs a Professional FM – Promoting Your Role

At this year’s IIDEX / Neocon Conference in Toronto, I had a chance to speak to a room full of facility and property management professionals about promoting their FM role within their organizations. In most of my discussions with facility managers, their profession doesn’t get as much recognition in their organizations as other departments or groups. It’s time that changed.
